On the verge of quitting
Its been about four years, yet, the essence is intact, the pleasure is sublime and satisfaction oozes over every drag. I took up smoking for fun sake, it was part of the syllabus but little did i know that four years down the line cigarettes would be an integral part of my life. I have shared a very strange relationship with the cigarette. Though we have immense respect for each other, there have been times when society has forced me to renounce my love. The cigarette on the other hand has been the the stronger one in our relationship. She has never let me down, being at my side through highs and lows. There have been times when i have been on the verge of quitting but her sheer beauty and seduction were just too good to resist.
I ll now go into some medical facts which i picked up from a random health magazine.
“Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths. It is a major cause of cancers of the lung, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, pharynx (throat), esophagus (swallowing tube connected to the stomach), and bladder, and it contributes to the development of cancers of the pancreas, cervix, kidney, stomach, and also some leukemias.”
But I ll pass, because the above statement is a conjured up piece of factual rubbish diced with experimental shit. The point is it does not touch the finer points of cigarette smoking. The sweet sound of the match striking the surface and the flame lighting up the cigarettes. You close your eyes and take the first drag in. The world around you ceases to exist, the essence of tobacco sweeps across your body and then you realize that you just had a tryst with divinity. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce you toheaven.
Lets come back to me, so after a lot of thought i have pinpointed three major factors among various others which have largely influenced my smoking:
1. MOVIES : Much of my college life passed watching a wide range of movies in various languages from English to Spanish to Hindi to Malayalam. All these movies had great Heroes. And most of the coolest actors shared one thing in common – A CIGARETTE, from Russell Crowe in “A Beautiful Mind,” John Travolta in “Basic”, Gwyneth Paltrow in “Great Expectations” , Johnny Depp in “The Ninth Gate” stars such as Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt exhaling smoke on screen not only tempted me but also hooked me to it. I am greatly inspired by the characters in the movies and so cigarettes are no exemption.
2. STRESS RELIEF : Now, this might seem absurd to non smokers but those who smoke will surely back me up in my argument that smoking helps reduce tension. It helps you to to relax and calm your nerves when stressed out. It brings peace to your cells and to your mind.
3. Mr. KJ : This is my dear friends is the catalyst. there have been various times that i have made conscious decisions to quit and dump her. My room mate Mr. KJ (name changed as per privacy policy) who happens to be hooked on to cigarettes is the one who disrupts all such attempts made by me. Though he is not a person with diversified talents yet one thing i admire him for is the way he smokes his fag. He lights her up and takes in every drag with panache. A sight to behold my dear friends. My resolution go up in smoke as he smokes away to glory.
Apart from this she gives you the best chance to socialize, make new and good friends. I am sometimes shocked when people say cigarette smoking is against all high ethics and moral standards, because i just fail to catch the link between the two. It is true that smoking is injurious to health but I d rather ’smoke and die’ than ‘not smoke and live’. Today i pledge my allegiance to her, a bond for a lifetime – ME AND MY CIGARETTE.
Happy Smoking
